Honoring Dads On Father's Day: Fun Father's Day Facts & Gift Ideas for That Special Dad

There are all kinds of awesome dads. Some are strict and make sure their kids follow every single rule, helping them stick to each curfew. Other dads embarrass their kids at school with their laid-back personalities. Ultimately, it doesn’t matter what kind of father you have – the love, mentorship and protection from great fathers is universal.

Like Mother’s Day, Father’s Day is a special day to appreciate and celebrate the contributions that dads make to their families and kids – and men are stepping up more now than ever before. Between February 2020 and April 2021, nearly 1.6 million men left the labor force, and it wasn't just because of the economy. The number of men choosing to stay home and care for their families is on the rise.

History of Father's Day

Curious how Father's Day got its start? We can actually thank a woman for Father's Day.

In 1909, Sonora Louise Smart Dodd, a 16-year-old being raised by her widower dad, saw the need for a day to honor dads. She started what would be a 62-year campaign to have Father's Day established as a federal holiday. It is an amazing story and one that has helped people honor good dadsgood men – on that special Sunday in June every year, which was Sonora's dad's birth month. President Richard Nixon signed Father's Day into law as a holiday in 1972.

Here are a few more fun facts about Father's Day:

  • The first Father's Day celebration, though unofficial, was in Spokane, Wash., on June 19, 1910.
  • Father's Day is celebrated the first Sunday of September in Australia and the second Sunday in November in Finland.
  • Dads have their own flower: the rose. Wear a red rose for a living dad and a white rose for a dad who has passed away.

Many of us have fond memories of Father's Day. The third Sunday in June can also help busy dads remember why they became fathers in the first place – connecting with the significance and celebration of being a father. Because 63 percent of North American fathers say they spend too little time with their kids, dads should consider spending their free time with their families.

Gifts for Dads

With the coronavirus pandemic on the decline, it's estimated that people will spend $20.1 billion this Father's Day compared to $17 billion in 2020. About 75 percent plan to celebrate their dad and spend an estimated $174.10 on the perfect Father's Day gift.

Gift guides can make things easier and save time – whether for a dad looking for a great gift for his elderly father, a wife and kids looking for a gift for daddy, or busy, young adults trying to find the right gift for their stepdad.

We don’t want any gifts, just want to hang out with our kids on Father’s Day! Just like most moms on Mother’s Day we don’t want to have to cook lol

That's hilarious, Mike Prochaska ! What about grilling, is that an exception? ;-)
