Let's Stop COVID-19 Together: Fellow Americans, Please Join Me So We Can Do Our Part to End the Coronavirus Pandemic

I have a vivid memory of the feeling of unity in these United States of America following the 9/11 catastrophe. This horrific event brought Americans together to defeat our visible enemy. I remember the pride I felt teaching my children about how we come together as one because we are Americans and we live in the “land of the free, home of the brave.”

Today, during this global coronavirus pandemic, I am saddened by the lack of unity between Americans as we all face the same invisible enemy that is taking more lives every day. As Americans, we have the right to express our own opinions about this virus and how it is impacting our lives. However, verbally attacking educators, politicians, scientists, nurses, doctors, etc., has to stop!

If you have not lived with the impact of COVID-19 in your own family, you have no idea how devastating it can be physically and emotionally. I would not wish for anyone to experience watching their loved ones fight for their lives. This virus does not care who it attacks. People just like you and me are getting sick. We are all at risk to succumb under its control.

It is no one’s fault that this virus is among us. We cannot blame people who become sick and unknowingly spread it to others. I’m frustrated and angry, not at anyone specifically, but at the virus, COVID-19. I absolutely detest COVID-19! I want to be safe! I want you to be safe! I want it to give us back our lives!

I support all essential workers and thank them for their tireless role in helping all of us get through this catastrophic time. I thank all the medical professionals for saving us and putting their own lives at risk. I applaud the scientists whose brilliance are working toward a cure to defeat this monster. I understand parent concerns about the uncertainty of education at this time and its impact on children. But, remember, COVID-19 caused this, not your children’s teachers. We are all dealing with the same enemy that is controlling us. We need to stop the finger pointing and name calling. Our anger should not be with each other, but with COVID-19.

So, what do I do as an American to destroy this enemy? I try to place all of my anger and pain toward COVID-19 by trying to eradicate it from existence. I listen to the scientists and my elected state leaders who know more than I do about this virus. I wear a mask. I socially distance. I use recommended hygiene methods. I avoid crowds. I respect you and your opinions. I don’t place blame on others.

Will you join me? Will you do what I do to help STOP COVID-19? Please unite with fellow Americans to defeat this destructive virus that is taking away our rights and our freedom. Stop spreading your anger and pain toward people or protective systems that are in place, but rather put your time and energy toward defeating COVID-19

Yes, it does feel a bit like post-9/11 when we all needed to come together - to deal with the trauma of what is happening as well as to ensure it stops happening. There are fundamental things we need to do to make this end - masks, social distance, hygiene, avoid crowds, etc. - and I so wish we could all come together and do what needs to be done in order to get back a at least a "new normal." Thank you for sharing these insights and your perspective, Mindy Hudon, M.S., CCC-SLP . The more that people share their experiences, hopefully the more that people will understand and help this madness end. XOXO
