Morning Routines & Your Health: 5 Healthy Habits to Help Start the Day Off Right

How we wake up and feel each morning can have a huge impact on how the rest of our day goes. Many of us find getting up in the morning a struggle, but regardless of what time you usually get up or how you feel, you probably already have your own set of daily habits that you complete without even realizing it.

You may have noticed that when your morning starts off a little bit crazy, the rest of the day seems to go the same way. In order to stop this from happening, it's helpful to introduce some healthy habits into our morning routines. Here are five habits to consider including in your morning routine to help you start your day more positively:

1. Get a Good Night’s Sleep

We are less likely to wake up feeling refreshed and ready for a new day if we’ve had a bad night's sleep. While we’re asleep, our bodies work hard to repair themselves, maintain our physical health and support our brain function. Sleep plays such a large part in our mental clarity, mental well-being and quality of life, that it can have huge effects on our overall health.

According to the Mayo Clinic, we need at least seven hours of quality sleep every night for optimal health. There are lots of things we can do to increase the amount and quality of sleep we get at night. We can make the environment we’re sleeping in more relaxing and calming, and we can purchase products to help us feel more comfortable.

If you’re struggling to get to sleep because you’re uncomfortable, then now might be the time to invest in a new mattress. Each year we see new beds, trends and technologies claiming to be the best on the market, but how do you know which mattress will suit your needs? Here are some of the best mattresses in 2020 to help you make your decision.

2. Wake Up Earlier

Lots of us dislike the idea of waking up earlier in the morning. However, rising early can have a number of benefits, including having more time to complete morning tasks. A study published in the Journal of Psychiatric Research even found that waking up early may make you less likely to suffer from depression. If you don’t like the idea of waking up an hour earlier in a morning, then consider setting your alarm 10 minutes earlier each night for a week. This way, you’ll gradually ease yourself into the habit of getting up a little bit earlier each day.

3. Avoid Technology

The first thing most of us do when we wake up in the morning is look at our smartphones. While many of us enjoy scrolling through social media and checking our messages, it can actually waste a lot of time each morning. Spending too long on social media may mean that you’re having to rush other tasks in order to complete them on time. This can leave you feeling stressed and unhappy.

4. Drink Water

It’s a good idea to start your morning off by drinking a glass of water. Drinking a warm glass of lemon water can help to remove toxins from your body, aid digestion and may also provide you with a good source of vitamin C. Studies have found that drinking water in the morning can make you more alert and help with concentration and memory.

5. Exercise

Whether you choose to complete a quick 30-minute workout, take the dog for a walk or do a simple yoga routine is up to you. Exercising in the morning has a number of health benefits for both your body and mind. Choose an exercise routine that fits into your schedule. Remember, the exercise you choose doesn’t have to be too hard or last too long.

In some cases, habits are formed because they’re easy, but if you want to have healthy habits, then you need to put some time and effort into forming them. This is even more true with morning habits. Remember, how your day starts may often have an impact on how the rest of your day goes. To make sure you're acting, thinking and feeling your best, add some of the above habits to your morning routine.

This is awesome advice. I have been telling my husband we may need a new mattress. Sleep is so important. A regular bedtime is key. Thank you for these great tips!

A mattress does make a HUGE difference. I slept in one of our guest beds with my grandson a few weeks ago, and I woke up with a stiff back and not-so-great attitude. :) Invest in a good mattress, people!
I definitely find I sleep better at night and feel better in the morning if I quit tech at least an hour before bed. And exercise is so important for overall health.

Same here. I even turned on that blue light filter on mine, but it doesn't really help.
Perfect advice, thanks. 😴
I drink lemon water every morning. Great way to start the day healthy.
Donna John
Smart. I need to start doing that.

My senior dog now wakes me up between 6 and 7 to go potty, so she has helped me start getting up early. I do feel better when I get up earlier. Drinking water is, for some reason, always an issue for me. That's what I need to work on. Great tips here!

I need to work on all of this! 😂

Love the idea of setting the alarm 10 minutes earlier for a week.

Great idea. Thanks.

Hey, what about coffee? Water is certainly important, but grinding the beans and brewing the coffee is a wonderful tradition to mark the start of the day. Elisa A. Schmitz 30Seconds brings the water and I make the java!
