"Coming Together: Standing Up to Racism": Takeaways From the Town Hall About Racism By CNN & Sesame Street by Donna John

After protests broke out across the country because of the death of George Floyd at the hands of a Minneapolis police officer, CNN and Sesame Street planned a town hall meeting to address the issue of racism and social injustice in America.
Coming Together: Standing Up to Racism. A CNN/Sesame Street Town Hall for Kids and Families aired on Saturday, June 6, and talked to kids about "racism, the recent nationwide protests, embracing diversity and being more empathetic and understanding.” CNN commentator Van Jones and anchor Erica Hill moderated the 60-minute special along with Big Bird, Elmo, Abby Cadabby and Rosita.
The show "left no stone unturned, discussing everything from how to fight racism when you see it and who to call when police officers are being unsafe," said CNN. The questions answered were submitted by parents. Here are some topics from the important conversations that took place from the CNN website:
Elmo Learned About Racism and Protesting
"Racism is when people treat other people unfairly because of the way they look or the color of their skin," his dad, Louie, told Elmo. "Not all streets are like Sesame Street. On Sesame Street, we all love and respect on another. Across the country, people of color, especially in the black community, are being treated unfairly because of how they look, their culture, race and who they are."
Atlanta Mayor Keisha Bottoms Answered Questions
"Just keep being who you are, keep loving each other and when you see someone who is doing something wrong or saying something wrong, say that it's wrong," Bottoms said. "Say it with love and just lead by love."
