Surviving the Economic Wreckage of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) Pandemic: Adam Markel's 3 Rituals of Resilience You Can Start Today

With unemployment now at the highest levels since the Great Depression, resilience is the key people need to adapt and “pivot” in the economic wreckage of coronavirus (COVID-19). Rituals that create resilience are vital to your pivot. Here are some tips to help anyone facing massive change and disruption (pretty much all of us, right?).

Start By Reframing

One aspect of resilience is how you are able to take in some idea, some experience and see it differently than the way you default to seeing it. We all have a way of thinking about things and giving meaning to things based on the way we were programmed – on our upbringing and early childhood experiences, including trauma. Right now, for instance, many people are thinking, "I don’t like the unknown. The uncertainty is driving me crazy." Or worse, "My life (or my business) is going down the tubes."

Reframing tops the list of three traits of resilient people, leaders and organizations. I call it:

  1. Shifting into neutral. This is the ability to look at situations and not ignore the reality, but remove judgment about what is good or bad. This allows you to widen your field of vision so you can see other options by asking one question – "What is the creative opportunity here?"
  2. Recalibrate a route to where you want to go. It's the same for any business – the concept of recognizing we're not where we planned on being, and yet that's still OK. In your car, your GPS doesn't berate you because you made a wrong turn. It just figures out how to get where you're supposed to go.
  3. Ritualize your recovery “map.” Research looking at the highest-performing athletes and business folks finds the common denominator in their success is commitment to recovery. We give people a digital assessment with 16 questions, and then give them an analysis so they can create a recovery map of their own. Take my Resilient Leader Assessment.

We look at recovery in four areas: mental, emotional, physical and spiritual. And that’s where we get into small changes and things you can do to allow recovery to occur.
