Healthy Food Habits for Kids: Why It Begins Before You Even Start Preparing a Meal by KLA Schools of Plainfield

Parents often get so caught up in the daily hustle and bustle of life that they forget to slow down and take time when necessary. Children under 5 are more susceptible to foodborne illnesses and other health issues that can result because their immune systems are still developing. To keep kids safe and create healthier food habits, keep these three tips in mind:
1. Wash your hands properly. Before touching any food, make sure you wash your hands with warm, soapy water. Anytime you step away or touch an object that’s dirty, wash them again.
2. Cook food to the proper temperature. Whether it’s pork, beef, chicken or even seafood, make sure the internal temperature hits at least the minimum for healthy consumption.
3. Teach your child how to eat properly. This includes not shoving large portions in their mouth or taking a piece that’s too big. Also be aware of hard to swallow foods and cut those up, as needed.
