To My Beloved Dog, Kodi: Your Paw Print Will Be Forever on My Heart

Yesterday, we said goodbye to our beautiful German Shepherd, Kodi. She was part of our family for only 13 short years, which to us felt like a lifetime. It’s hard to think of time when she wasn’t part of our family.

Kodi loved to be outside, go for long walks, run, take a dip in the lake and chase her squeaky ball. She was a diva through and through and liked things her way. You can imagine how intimidating a German Shepherd can be to strangers, but Kodi girl had a kind and gentle soul and was often complimented on her beauty inside and out. But, she was a jealous girl, who did not like our family cats. A bird could take a nibble from her food bowl without as much as a whimper, but if a cat placed one paw in her path she would show her true German Shepherd nature.

Kodi was an inspiration to our son, which led him toward his career path. In fourth grade, he wrote a story about her, which then developed into the creation of, “Kodi’s Adventure The Movie.” During the filming, she loved spending time with our boys and their cast member friends. We share very special memories of this experience.

Kodi knew just how to manipulate me. All she needed to do was sit pretty and I would give her one of her favorite treats. We always said that she was a dog on duty and had a hard time settling when we were around. She was our protector.

Kodi, I hope you know that I would have continued to spend my days with you, carrying and caring for you if that was what you wanted. You did not need to feel embarrassed or apologize for your unexpected accidents. I wanted to be there for you. I know you tried your hardest to be strong and brave for us, but I saw it in your eyes ... you were ready.

The hardest thing for me was letting you go. Please know that your paw print will be forever on my heart. I love you, Kodi girl!
