"Power Girl": A Poem for Those Suffering From Depression & Abandonment Issues

This poem is dedicated to anyone who has ever felt abandoned or is battling depression. Power on.

Power Girl

Something like a super woman
I can do it all
Never let ‘em see me sweat
Never see me fall
Smart
Sexy
Sophisticated
From the surface it looks like I am lacking nothing
Never incompetent
Always carrying myself with grace and confidence
But little do you know I am one of many who suffer from depression
Had a hard life growing up
My mother was aggressive
Her issues started with my grandmother
And the $hit became repetitive
Day to day
I constantly carry the shame and abandonment
I was left for a man
Mamma worried more about who she could sleep with
It can make you feel like $hit to know you were abandoned for a man
The pain I feel only those who have experienced will understand
But I’m a power girl
Powerful girl I am
I won’t let the past be reflected in my future
I speak this for the culture
No longer giving power to my abuser but letting them see me suffer
I push forward even though I was never loved by my mother
Power girl who’s prominent
Power girl. Power girl. Power girl.
