Labor Day Matters: 6 Healthy Reasons to Celebrate This Federal Holiday

Labor Day was invented because workers felt they were spending too much time working. Sound familiar? Today, most people associate Labor Day with last-day-of-summer barbeques, but many see it as a bonus holiday instead of a gentle yearly reminder to take a break from work.

If you’re planning business as usual this Labor Day, here are six reasons to change your mind:

  • Americans spend more than 100 hours commuting every year, and long commutes are linked to things like obesity, high blood pressure and depression.
  • A quarter of Americans say work is their single biggest source of stress.
  • The U.S. is the only advanced economy not to guarantee paid time off.
  • Every year, 28 million Americans do not get a single paid day off.
  • The average American worker receives 10 paid vacation days, but half don’t use them.

Business experts say job satisfaction jumps from 40 to 70 percent when employees take time off. Physical health follows the same trajectory. If you haven’t taken your share of vacation, rethink your Labor Day plans.

Agreed! Americans work way too much. It amazes me how many people don't take their vacation time. Downtown and relaxation are so important to our health and our productivity at work. #noworkonlaborday

Excellent reasons why we should all take a break on Labor Day, especially this year, which has been so hard on everyone. Happy Labor Day, Joyce Knestrick, CRNP, FAANP !
