Coffee in Croatia: The Perfect Cup of Coffee on the Cliffs of Rovinj, Croatia

Croatians have coffee down to a science. Their love of coffee rivals the Italians obsession. During my visit I took it as a personal challenge to find just the right experience. It was in Rovinj where I found a blend of great coffee and exceptional atmosphere.

I had seen numerous blog posts about Mediterraneo Bar, but while we were there it remained closed for the season. On our second to last day I wrote to the owner on Facebook asking when they would open, explaining I had walked past the bar every day in hopes of visiting before we left. Incredibly he offered to come to the bar and open for half an hour just for me. Stunned by his generosity I agreed.

The next day when I walked through the arched orange doors a paradise appeared before my eyes. Beyond the bar was the beautiful Adriatic sea and a small island. The view was perfection. While this view can be seen from many of the café’s and restaurants in Rovinj, the difference with Mediterraneo is the actual bar.

As my coffee was made I was invited to take a seat at either an adorable seaside table or on one of the many cushions and pillows placed strategically on the white rocky cliff. As my coffee was set on the small colorful table beside me I couldn’t help but smile. Never in my life had I sat in such a perfect bar. From the rocky cliffs I basked in the Croatian sun, sipping a perfect cappuccino and listening to the waves of the turquoise-colored sea hit the shore barely below my feet.

The moment was pure perfection. Reluctantly as I stood to leave, I realized I would probably never have a more perfect coffee experience. Luckily Mediterraneo is open from April through October for coffee, cocktails and more so anyone can visit and have the same amazing experience as I did.

I was in Croatia few years ago and still remember saying, “Mogu imati jedan espresso, molim.” Or, “may I have one espresso, please,” a few times a day. I don’t speak Croatian, but it was a term I picked up quickly.

I am embarrassed to say I didn't pick up any Croatian when I visited. I will be going back this fall though so now I know how to ask for a coffee. Thanks!
