Working Mom of 4 Earns Master's Degree: Here's This Strong Woman's "Secret Sauce" by Shannon Richardson

Working Mom of 4 Earns Master's Degree: Here's This Strong Woman's "Secret Sauce"

I finally did it! Being a full-time working mom of four boys would be enough in itself, but I also cope with multiple chronic illnesses, so this was a pretty big accomplishment. I was horrified it took so long, but looking back, there honestly isn’t anything I could have done differently. I just chipped away a little at a time until the end was in sight. Here’s my secret sauce:

  • As a non-traditional student (and working mom), try not to obsess too much about your work and find shortcuts like ways to skim readings and be efficient when writing papers.
  • You are good enough and college is a place where being “older” and having life experience is welcomed and appreciated!
  • It really is OK to sometimes skip a class. Know that you will always be harder on yourself than any of your teachers will be.
  • SELF-CARE, SELF-CARE, SELF-CARE! Did I mention self-care?

A lot has changed since I started this journey in (gasp) spring 2012 including major health and lifestyle changes, but one thing that never changed was the constant love and support from my family and friends. Your faith in me means more than you could ever know. I love you!
