Urgent FBI Warning: Reboot Your Home Router or Risk Being Vulnerable to Hackers by Jessica Acree
Did you reboot your internet router yet? If not, the FBI advises you do so without delay. The federal alert made public on May 25, 2018, warns of a security threat that makes both home and business networks vulnerable to hackers. The reboot will disrupt what's being called a significant effort to access your personal data. You should also reboot your networked devices. Here's what you need to know:
- VNPFilter malware was used by "foreign cyber actors" to compromise hundreds of thousands of devices worldwide. Malware is short for "malicious software." According to internet security company Norton, malware is specifically designed to gain access or damage a computer without the knowledge of the owner.
- The FBI says once access is granted, malware is able to perform multiple functions, including the ability to collect information as it passes through or even block network traffic. It could also make your router inoperable.
- Protect yourself going forward by changing your network passwords. Make them unique and strong. Do not use default user IDs and passwords, that is a classic open invitation to hackers.
- If your computer is acting up and you worry you are a victim of this malware attack or any cyber scam, file a complaint online with the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center.
