Perfect Parents? Nope! Mom & Dad, Learn How to Embrace Imperfection & Find Joy by Kandice Cole

When my daughter was born, I was reminded by friends and family that I couldn't do it all. I was told constantly that there was no such thing as a perfect parent. I fully understood this in my head. I knew that the perfect mother didn't actually exist, but this didn't stop me from trying to reach this impossible standard. I quickly learned that embracing imperfection was easier said than done.
I would find myself exhausted trying to keep everything together at home and with work. I would lay in bed rehearsing all the moments I fell short, which led to lots of unnecessary guilt and shame.
After two years, I have fewer nights like that because of one simple shift in my perspective. I have learned to let go of this notion that I'm falling short because that idea is rooted in the illusion of perfection. Being a mother is an adventure, and adventures rarely follow a linear, smooth path. When I find myself in the midst challenges and chaos, I view it as a natural part of the journey rather than a detour or shortcoming on my part.
Moving beyond perfection has allowed me to find more joy in motherhood and show my daughter the importance of being her most authentic self.
