Attending Live Theater Performances Benefits Kids: Here's How! (Plus You Could Win Tickets!)

Have you taken your children to a live theater performance? According to a study from the University of Arkansas, exposure to live theater can lead to "greater tolerance and improved ability to read the emotions of others." I have taken my children to performances since they were old enough to sit in a seat. You can start with simple, short performances at your community rec center or amateur theater club and work up to full-length performances.

In school, the arts are in constant competition with fundamentals and standardized testing. As parents, we can ensure that our children's exposure to music, theater and similarly creative endeavors are still present by seeking out events in the community and making arts a priority.

If you live in the Chicago area, you can take your children to see a classic live on stage – the Wizard of Oz is coming to the Chicago Theatre May 8-20, 2018! You have the opportunity to win a family four pack to the 7 p.m. performance on May 9! Simply fill out the Rafflecopter form to enter!

I used to love taking my kids to plays! Guess we could still do this as adults. May look into that, Cheryl Leahy . Mike Prochaska , this ticket giveaway sounds right up your alley! Are they doing anything like this in the Houston area, Cheryl?

Taking my kids to plays was my absolute favorite thing to do with them when they were little. The look on their faces was priceless. The Wizard of Oz in one of the best ever. Thanks for sharing this, Cheryl Leahy !

Yes, yes, yes! As a former HS drama teacher and theatre professor, I couldn't agree more! There are so many benefits, both cognitive and affective, of exposing kids to the arts. Thanks, Cheryl Leahy !
