Kids, Apps & Social Media: Parents, Here's a Resource to Help Stay Current With Our Tech-Savvy Kids

Video games. Yesterday at a family party, my young son was watching his older cousins play Fortnight. I. Am. Not. Ready. For. This. Today, I was scrolling through Twitter when I came upon an article that I thought needed to be shared. We are 10 steps behind our kids when it comes to technology; how do we keep up? How do we teach our kids to stay safe out there on the internet?

The article from AppsolutelyApril.com is an amazing, current resource that details apps that teens are using that we need to know about, parental restrictions, secret apps and fake user accounts. Here are just a few of the websites we need to know about:

  • Calculator%: According to the article, this app "looks like a calculator but functions like a secret photo vault."
  • Omegle: It's a "free online chat website that promotes chatting anonymously to strangers."
  • Wishbone: An "app that allows users to compare kids against each other and rate them on a scale."

Please take the time to read this and educate your kids! See the complete list of apps teens are using that parents need to know about via AppsolutelyApril.com. If you know of a questionable app or have a tip to help keep our kids safe online, please share below!

This is such an important post, LeslieP . Thank you for sharing this article. When my kids were in grade school, the scary app was Ask.fm. Because kids post anonymously, it was being used for cyber-bullying and more. Today, it frightens me how many more secret and destructive apps are out there. Thank you for sharing this!

Can I confess that I - as dependent as I am on technology- wish it would all go away? The stress of being vigilant for our kids, oh my. I really do wish we were back to the days of the playground bully that we could all see. The things that happen now just break my heart.
