Where Has Compassion Gone? How & Why to Deliver Healing Words Every Day

We walk around with wounds on this earth. We are imperfect beings living in a broken world with jagged glass lying on our paths. Confident we are good at navigating the hazardous waste left by others' pain, yet stepping on that hidden sharpness, cutting into our core being and leaving a wound that no physician can heal.

These are the wounds we inadvertently deliver to one another, unintentional and seemingly without meaning. Where has compassion gone? It seems it has evaporated at the same rate technology has boomed. Do we recognize compassion when offered? Or are we too involved in the cynical bantering of an online war? Or maybe absorbed in a self-inflicted situation of isolation?

Grace, mercy, kindness, compassion. It may take an extra eight seconds to process a loving word and another five seconds to say it out loud, yet those belabored 13 seconds have a healing impact that is timeless. You may not think you are the deliverer of healing words – we make the decision to heal or harm so quickly, so mindlessly.

When we've been careless, or another brother or sister has been thoughtless, express and extend compassion – a smile, a hug, encouraging word. You both walk away with love.

“A kind gesture can reach a wound that only compassion can heal.” – Steve Maraboli

This is so true. It costs nothing to be kind and yet so many rarely do it.
