Kids That Meditate: How & Why I Teach Meditation to My 5-Year-Old Daughter by Melissa Hurt

When parents learn I teach yoga to children, they guffaw and say how their child could never do yoga. They claim they are too active, too wild and would never be still. How do you know unless you have earnestly tried? Why not give your child a chance to step into new shoes?
I have been teaching yoga to my child since she was a young toddler. At this time, yoga was fun, silly and exploratory. As she has aged, I have included more breathing practices in our yoga time together.
I am now sharing meditation with her. I teach her how to sit on a yoga block or cushion and close her eyes. She trusts I will not tickle her or disturb her because I have earned her trust over time.
I guide her on how to feel her breath in her belly, how to feel light like a snowflake and how to feel space inside of her. She sits quietly, smiles, and finds stillness for herself. It is a beautiful couple of minutes. Over time, I will extend the length of meditation with the hope she will carry the practice on for herself as she ages.
I cannot guarantee my daughter will be the ambassador for world peace. But, I am certain she will know how to find peace for herself.
