Restore Your Spirit: How to Find Inner Calm, One Breath at a Time

As a yoga teacher, I’m no stranger to the exhausted student taking a class to find 75 minutes of quietude, grounding and a boost in energy. She moves with her eyes partially closed focusing her awareness inward on sensation. At the end of class, she walks a bit more lightly, her inner glow returned and she tells me how much she needed that.

What if I told you that you don’t need a yoga class to gain these benefits? All you need to do is find your grounding wherever you are and feel your breath wherever you feel it. If you are sitting, feel where your body touches the chair. If you are standing, feel your feet on the ground. Wherever you feel your body making contact with where you are, this is your grounding.

  • Inhale, notice where you feel your breath move. Your chest? Your belly? Maybe it’s only in the sinus cavity – this is fine!
  • Exhale, feel the floating sensation at the end. Keep breathing and soften your belly to allow your breath to descend into your belly, side ribs and back over time. Repeat for as long as you can.

Notice the calm that has come, the balance in your mind and how your spirit is restored. This can be a daily practice to help you find your inner calm. Enjoy!
