Ho’oponopono: How to Practice the Hawaiian Secret to Forgiveness in 4 Simple Steps by Stephanie Cannoe
Ho’oponopono is a Hawaiian healing practice of reconciliation and forgiveness. The Hawaiian word ho’oponopono comes from ho’o (“to make”) and pono (“right”). The repetition of the word means “doubly right,” or being right with both self and others, and it is a process by which we can forgive ourselves and the people around us. The power is in believing in the willingness of the Universe (God) to forgive and love, even when we fall short. We take full responsibility for what we create and healing is simply to correct our misperceptions.
Dr. Ihaleakala Hew Len, a therapist in Hawaii, is noted to have cured a complete ward of people found to be criminally insane – without ever seeing any of them. He simply repeated, "I’m sorry and I love you" over and over again when reviewing a patient’s file. As he healed himself, and cleared out his preconceptions in how he viewed others, the patients miraculously improved, including the surrounding situation and in ways he couldn’t have imagined. The old patterns of fear and negativity were healed, too.
Forgiveness doesn’t mean to live in denial of the truth. There is power in correct action. Here’s how to practice Ho’oponopono:
- Repentance (I’m Sorry): A simple statement to accept that a problem exists and that you own part of it. When you own the problem fully, you are empowered to make a change with humility recognizing that you are human, too!
- Ask for Forgiveness (Please Forgive Me): When we get in touch with our deepest feelings and wounds compassionately, and with forgiveness and gratitude for ourselves and others, there is great healing.
- Gratitude (Thank You): Even if you don’t know what the resolution is yet, thank yourself for being the best you can be and for your willingness to expand your capacity to love.
- Love (I Love You): Embrace the energy of love, the transformative process is what is causing you to grip, so you can see what you need to see. This is loving and purposeful. Honor your feelings. Acknowledge any limiting beliefs with awareness.
Keep practicing this prayer as often as needed. A kaleidoscope with the light reflecting through it will keep shifting until it becomes perfectly and suddenly clear. Use this image as a reminder that you’re simply realigning and the hold this pattern had on you previously, including any resentment and pain, will shift. When you feel spaciousness, true peace of mind and clarity will take its place and the miracles will begin to reveal themselves – the truth is it’s all in the way you reflect the light.
