Aerie Real: Promoting "Girl Power" With a Campaign About Body Positivity, Vulnerability & Strength by Jen Imbaro

“Girl power” is at the forefront of current events lately, but Aerie, a line by American Eagle, was way ahead of the game in 2014, when they challenged supermodel standards by not retouching photos. Recently, the Aerie Real Role Models for 2018 were announced: singer/songwriter Rachel Platten, actress Yara Shahidi, gymnast Aly Raisman and body positivity activist Iskra. This campaign is about more than body positivity. It’s about empowering women to be who they are, speak their truths, love themselves and feel comfortable in their own skin.

Aly Raisman speaks about surviving. Rachel Platten speaks of vulnerability. I am a survivor of infertility and divorce. I’ve found that the more open I am about these experiences, the lighter and stronger I feel. With strength comes confidence. I can look at myself in the mirror and smile at the faint pink C-section scar hiding beneath my round belly, marvel at the iridescent stretch marks on my stomach and gaze knowingly at the wisdom behind my wrinkles. My body reflects me. And I am powerful.

By truly opening ourselves up to each other, we form deep and lasting connections. The power of women supporting women is something to behold, and we are a force to be reckoned with. Thank you, Aerie, for recognizing this power, and valuing real women and our natural beauty.

“You are Powerful & Beautiful!” Is what I’m teaching my 3 daughters. Be YOU! Don’t ever change who YOU are for anyone. If your gonna change, make it be a positive change within your spirit, mind, body and hold your head up high.

My own personal mantra is "Brilliant, Beautiful, Badass." Maybe not quite the right words to share with our kids...but the message is the same!

This is such an awesome message. I am struggling with the wrinkles...
The more we are exposed to ads and campaigns like this the better for all of us!
