New Year Goals & Dreams: What Would You Do If You Knew You Could Not Fail? Tell Us!

Fellow 30Seconds contributor Stephanie Cannoe posed a question on social media for friends to consider as they looked ahead to the new year: What would you do if you knew you could not fail? The responses were varied and inspiring:

  • start a business
  • write full-time
  • become a foster parent
  • travel the world
  • run an animal sanctuary
  • become a wildlife photographer
  • become a farmer
  • sing
  • start a non-profit

And more! This got me thinking; what if we asked this question of a larger audience? What if we posed this question to our 30Seconds tribe?

So … what about you? What would you do if you knew you could not fail? Comment below and share your response with us. We’ll compile all responses and share them in a new 30Seconds tip, a look at what our community would do if we knew failure wasn’t an option. Who knows, maybe some of you will be inspired to pursue your dreams this year. Imagine what we could accomplish collectively!

Here’s to community and to dreaming big! Cheers!

To bring people together in community and to inspire each other to live the life we've imagined. To make those connections collectively and to support each other on our way. The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. 💓
Elisa Schmitz
Inspiring as always, Stephanie Cannoe . Let me know how I can support your vision! xoxo
Stephanie Cannoe
Thank You! Elisa All Schmitz 30Seconds Your support means so much. I am excited to see what's next and will let you know.
Mike Prochaska
Travel the world would be awesome!!!
Elisa Schmitz
Great goal, Mike Prochaska ! Where would you start your journey? Do you have some "bucket list" destinations?
Elisa Schmitz
I've never been there and would love to go as well, Mike Prochaska !
Ann Marie Patitucci
I loved Australia! My play had its international premiere there. I hope you are both able to go, Elisa All Schmitz 30Seconds & Mike Prochaska !
Elisa Schmitz
This is such a wonderful post, Ann Marie Gardinier Halstead ! I have so many things I would do, I don't know where to begin. I have so many big dreams for 30Seconds and how to grow it to reach more people with inspirational content (like this post). So I guess I would start by raising enough capital to grow our team to be able to fulfill our mission of truly making life better for our global community. To touch more lives. To effect more positive change. But I also want to be careful to not change our unique culture and offerings by growing too big or too fast. So, I'm still figuring it all out, I guess. A "good problem," for sure. Thank you for raising this and I can't wait to see what everyone else shares! xoxo
Ann Marie Patitucci
Elisa All Schmitz 30Seconds : I love this! It's definitely a good problem to have. I love being a part of our team and making life better for our community!
Jeff Jackson
I've always wanted to be an actor, writer and filmmaker. It's not failing that bothers me. It's making a living at it.
Elisa Schmitz
How wonderful, Jeff Jackson ! True that it's hard to make a living at it (especially if you're not in LA, etc), but maybe you could dip your toe in the water by being an extra in local TV productions, or commercial work?
Ann Marie Patitucci
Jeff Jackson : I can totally relate. I'm a writer with an MFA in Theatre (directing). :)
Carrie Brady
I would adopt a child or become a foster parent. Or start a non profit no kill animal shelter
Ann Marie Patitucci
Love this, Carrie Brady ! I have always wanted to adopt!
Keri De Deo
I'm pretty much doing what I've always wanted: writing and editing full time. What I would change is to get rid of the fear of failure I feel almost every day. If I knew I couldn't fail, I would stay on this path and stop worrying about tomorrow and just enjoy today!
Ann Marie Patitucci
That’s amazing that you’re doing what you’ve always wanted, Keri De Deo . You’re an inspiration!
Keri De Deo
Thanks, Ann Marie! You inspire me daily!
Sheri B Doyle
Wow can I relate to your answer. I try to remind myself I am not failing if I am doing what I love. I may not always reach my best but the only way I am failing is if I am not doing anything.
Mike Prochaska
I would goto spring training in Arizona. And Florida to every spring training baseball park. I just got Email spring training tickets went on sale today
Michelle Nelson-Schmidt
Love it! My Dad does this with his childhood best friend of 66 years! They go almost every year to one or the other together places. They met at 8 years old and played baseball together. They’re both 74 now.
Kirstin Ahearn
Create a dream garden ... and since I couldn't fail, nothing would die (except weeds).
Ann Marie Patitucci
That sounds wonderful, Kirstin Ahearn ! Love it!
Jen Imbaro
Be a full time blogger? Or start a business designing and making stuff...graphic and interior design oriented. Patterns for textiles, housewares, stationery and gift wrap, invitations, party supplies, furniture, etc. I do like to think of myself as a designer of all things after all. Would love to be able to just do that and live off of it.
Ann Marie Patitucci
You would be amazing at that, Jen Imbaro ! You are a total Maker!
Michelle Nelson-Schmidt
Love this! Failure is actually HOW we get to our dream life. I deciddd many years ago to go after my dream life and just refused to give up until I did it. I used every failure (MANY) as a learning experience to move me forward.

I’ve been living my failure-filled (because I still mess up a LOT, but learn so much so fast that way) dream life for 7 years now.

I’m a children’s book author and illustrator and motivational speaker now living at the beach.

So accept that failure is PART of the dream you want and GO FOR IT! ❤️
Ann Marie Patitucci
Michelle Nelson-Schmidt , I love this SO MUCH! And I think you may have begun your next tip here. :)
Michelle Nelson-Schmidt
Great minds! I was thinking the same thing!! Third tip! (Submitted my second 2 days ago!)
Sheri B Doyle
That is really awesome and inspiring! Thank you!
John Countryman
I would write and perform a solo performance work based on the memoir I'm writing. I've done one-person shows in the past but never one that's autobiographical. I expect that, all else being equal, I'd do it even if it was considered a failure, because it would enrich me inestimably regardless.
Bri Montoya
I would turn my hobby of doing wood burning into a small side business.
Ann Marie Patitucci
You should do it, Bri Montoya ! You're so talented!
Nancy Dafoe
I'm doing it now. Writing full time (and I can fail at it), and it is freeing and more than a little difficult but worth it.
Ann Marie Patitucci
Good for you, Nancy Dafoe ! And you’re doing so well!
Tiffany Zook
Start a ukulele flash mob.
Sheri B Doyle
I am not afraid of failing but rather of not doing. I don't mind the failures, I always learn from them and grow stronger and better. I am bothered by not trying. Thanks for the post. It is a great way to reflect on where I am and where I am going.
Janine Hamilton
I would absolutely go back to school for something in the medical realm, and/or write full time. One day!
Ann Marie Patitucci
Writing full time is my dream too, Janine Hamilton !
Renee
This is such a hard question to answer! I’d love to be a consultant for special education teachers who are self-contained and/or co-teach!
Karen Vega
Finish my associates degree.
Heather Murphy-Fritz
I would write a book! And take the Virginia Social Work licensing exam to allow me the opportunity to go back into social work part-time. What a great post!
Gina Pomering
Hmm that’s hard... if I knew I could not fail would prob start a business so I could travel the world and sing once I made my millions!
Diona DeHaven Mower
If I knew I couldn’t fail, I would start the process to foster/adopt terminally ill babies. I fear I won’t be able to juggle my kids and job and the medical needs of babies that were born too sick to live long. I want to make sure I don’t fail them. I want to give them a loving home before passing on. I fear I have too much on my plate to start this process now.
Ann Marie Patitucci
Wow, Diona DeHaven Mower ! What a special, loving thing to want to do! What a gift!
Cindy Hlywa
Reading some of the selfless posts people have written makes me pause... but if being completely indulgent, I’d make a plan and a budget for some world travel.
Diona DeHaven Mower
It’s been a passion for a while. I am excited to do it but have to find the right timing. I don’t want to short change the babies because I can’t offer the time/focus they need.
Tom Templeton
I would audition for and get cast in a role on Broadway!
Elisa Schmitz
This is just the best question, ever. Lately, I have been thinking about health and how short life is. I have been watching a show called Bunker Hill that is about a hospital that merges the best medical talent with the best tech talent, and they solve the toughest medical challenges. I would love to be part of something like that to heal people! #dreaming Ann Marie Gardinier Halstead
Katie Sloan
Chris would be CEO of a Fortune 100 company or join the PGA Tour.
Ann Marie Patitucci
This sounds great, Katie Sloan ! But what would YOU do? :)
Katie Sloan
This is tough. I want to make a difference in this world but where to start? Everyone deserves first class healthcare. The disparity between those who have excess and those who have little is sickening to me. Our education system is not competing on a global scale. I guess if I could solve one of those problems, it would be a major feat.
Ellen Argenzio
If I knew I could not fail at bringing about changes in time and history, without precipitating more adverse outcomes; would navigate the neural nets and strings of time and space. Traveling in no doubt a challenging quest in human and universal dimensions.
Donna John
If I knew I couldn't fail, I would open a restaurant. I've been planning the menu since I was in elementary school. It's changed a lot over the years. ;-)
Nicole DeAvilla
That would be awesome Donna! You share so many great recipes here on #30Seconds - I know your menu would be fantastic!
Mamagrigs
I am always afraid of failing. If I knew I wouldn’t or couldn’t fail? I would run a marathon ( I hate running, btw, so that would be quite an accomplishment), sing and dance in front of people, learn a foreign language , specifically Spanish so I could communicate with my daughter’s in-laws in Spain.
Ann Marie Patitucci
I love these, Mamagrigs ! I can relate, too. I used to be very proficient in Spanish but I've lost it. I'd love to become fluent!
