Ever wish you had a simple and fast solution to stress? This were thrilled to welcome Dr. Amy Serin as our Twitter chat guest. Dr. Serin discussed why she felt compelled to leave a career in business to pursue neuroscience, and how she stays motivated to be a change agent in a field dominated by men. She also shared the story of her TouchPoints epiphany, and how she partnered with entrepreneur Vicki Mayo to bring her stress-busting discovery to the world in the form wearable technology.
Q: When and why did you decide to make neuroscience your life’s work?
In 2001, I left a career in business to pursue neuroscience, started a six-year graduate program and never looked back! I always loved studying the brain and how people behave based on differences in brain functioning. I wanted to help people live better lives and felt my passion for neuropsychology was the most effective way to do it.I am so glad I made that choice! I'm fascinated by the field's evolution and the positive impact it can have on others.
Neuroscience is soooo fascinating!! Amazed at how the brain works!! Mind boggling! #30seconds

Q: How did the idea for TouchPoints™ come about?
Three things lined up in my TouchPoints™ epiphany:
- I wanted to offer my patients accessible relief between appointments.
- I needed something to help my own children cope with their unique struggles. I knew many other parents must, too.
- I wanted to improve the well-being of people on a global scale who don't have regular access to doctors.
- I realized BLAST technology was the answer. Non-invasive, cost-effective – it wasn't fair to confine to doctor’s offices.
Definitely! One of the best things about TouchPoints: they're non-invasive and effortless- they help process the stress for you! #30seconds

Q: Your user data shows a 71 percent stress reduction in just 30 seconds. How do TouchPoints™ do that?
In my neurotherapy clinic I use a therapy called EMDR, the leading treatment for PTSD. EMDR incorporates bi-lateralstimulation in tactile form (BLAST). I discovered through EEG data that BLAST was effective as a stand-alone. TouchPoints™ use BLAST in the form of gentle alternating vibrations on each side of the body. This reroutes the fight, flight or freeze (F3) mechanism, shifting the brain from F3 back into the rational state.
I'd love a drug free stress reliever besides my blood pressure medicine! #30seconds

Q: The TouchPoints™ #crowdfunding campaigns ended 500 percent and 900 percent beyond their original goals. How did you do it?
I think, when you have a product that works and that everyone can benefit from, word spreads very organically. Many users come back to us with amazing TouchPoints testimonials, and want to share the product with their loved ones. It's reflected in the support we receive from our community – not only do TouchPoints provide life changing relief, our users know we're invested in their experience and are always aiming to improve it. Q: What advice do you have for young women pursuing careers in the STEM fields?
Go for it if it's your passion! I am so fortunate to have listened to my intuition and followed my dream. The result is that every day I get to work with people and apply my knowledge of neuroscience to improve their lives. Understand that some fields are still male-dominated. There may be barriers, but be bold and be part of the change.Don't maintain the status quo with your career. I encourage women to be positive change agents and to take risks! Reflect, and ensure that you're contributing towards your life's purpose. If you aren't, it may be time for a change!
It's very true. Many obstacles as a woman in the science world, but worth it! #30Seconds
