3 Ways to Enhance Communication Without Saying a Word!

We have all been there. Something you said seems to have upset your child even more when you really meant to comfort and guide them. How could your words be mistaken when they came from a place of compassion, empathy and caring? Well, words aren't the only things that matter when communicating. Research shows that nonverbal communication can affect up to 80 percent of what you are telling your children. Here are three ways to enhance communication with your children:

  • Get on their level. Seeing eye to eye means literally getting on your child's level. Speaking to them while standing conveys that you look down on them and there is an immediate power differential.
  • Open heart, open mind. Open your posture as much as possible. Make sure not to cross your arms – this can look defensive, condescending or even aggressive to some children.
  • Make eye contact. The best way to be clear with your child is to make eye contact. This signals to the child that you are listening and that they are being seen and heard. This also models appropriate social cues, as it teaches your child good communication skills.
