Spring Gardening: How to Make DIY Garden Planters Out of Milk Jugs by Donna John

Show kids that recycling can be fun by making planters out of empty milk jugs. Make a day of it and take a trip to the local nursery and let them pick out some flowers, herbs, vegetables, seeds or whatever plants float their (recycled) boat.
Start saving those milk jugs now, and before long your family will have a whole milk jug garden to watch grow. What a fun way to help save the planet and introduce your kids to gardening.
You'll need:
- empty and clean gallon milk jugs
- scissors or craft knife
- potting soil
- plants or seeds
Here's how to do it:
- Take the empty milk jug and cut from beside the opening at the top halfway down, across and back up to form an opening. Be sure to leave the side with the handle intact. (Adult supervision required!)
- With the knife, carefully cut a few small drainage holes in the bottom of the jug.
- Fill with potting soil.
- Plant!
