The Equal Pay Act: How Far Have We Come in 55 Years? 7 Things Women Need to Know!

April 10, 2018, is Equal Pay Day, the day that U.S. working women catch up with what men earned last year. In other words, women work 15 months to earn what men make in 12. Did you know...

  • 40 percent of women are primary bread winners; that jumps to 75 percent for single moms.
  • Working mothers add an additional 80 minutes each workday to care for their children and homes.
  • While compensation is important, making friends at work along with job flexibility drive satisfaction for women.
  • In 1963, women earned 40 percent less than their male counterparts.
  • President Kennedy called the Equal Pay Act a “significant step forward.”
  • In 54 years, women inched up 20 percent to close the wage discrepancy.
  • This gap is even greater for minority women.

Clearly, we have a long way to go. Hopefully it doesn’t take another 55 years.
