Do you have a thorough inventory of the contents of your home? Ideally, you’d have a comprehensive inventory with receipts for large ticket items, but at a minimum you can easily create a visual record of everything you own. After the holidays is a great time to create your home inventory, since you may have received or purchased new, expensive items.

A great starting point is to photograph all the new items. To keep the momentum going, take your smartphone or a video camera and complete a tour of your house. Open cabinets, closets, drawers, etc., and create a visual record of everything you own. In the event of a loss, this will provide support for your insurance claim. Be sure to back up the digital photos and videos in a secure place.
