Do We Need to Tell Teens to Look Both Ways Crossing the Street? You May Be Surprised!

When was the last time you told your teen to be careful when crossing the road? We spend a lot of time – as we should – telling our young children to be careful crossing a street. But according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), we may be slacking off too much in the teen years. Compared to all other age groups, teens and young adults, ages 15 to 29, are more likely to be treated in emergency departments for crash-related injuries. And about one-third of pedestrians killed in traffic accidents were drinking. What to do?

  • Tell your teens the facts. Knowledge is always power.
  • Teens know that drinking and driving are bad news; let them know their risk as pedestrians, too.
  • No texting while crossing the street. This is becoming more and more of a problem!
  • Relax. Create awareness, not fear, with your teens.
