Does Your Child Suck His Thumb? 4 Negatives of Thumbsucking in Kids!

While babies usually grow out of thumbsucking, there are some negative effects if the thumbsucking continues past toddler age. Here are four reasons why it can be harmful!

  • Dental Issues – Constant pushing of the thumb against the inside of the upper front teeth can lead to misalignment.
  • Infection – Bacteria in the mouth gets into the skin where the thumb joins the skin and can cause infection.
  • Illnesses – Touching shared toys and putting fingers in the mouth increases the chance of passing around germs that can lead to illnesses.
  • Social Issues – Teasing sometimes happens to children who suck their thumbs past the toddler stage.
