Got a Bloody Nose? 5 Things You Need to Know to Stop the Flow!

Cold air and indoor heat can dry and irritate the nose. What should you do if you or your child gets a bloody nose? Don’t panic. Nosebleeds are normal and usually not indicative of anything serious.

  • Tilt the head forward and apply firm pressure by pinching the soft part of the lower nose between thumb and forefinger for 10 minutes.
  • A common mistake is to tilt the head back. This causes blood to flow to the stomach, which can cause irritation and vomiting.
  • If bleeding continues, put Vaseline on a gauze in the nostril and apply pressure for an additional 10 minutes.

Call your doctor if it persists.
