Concussion Concerns: The Protecting Student Athletes From Concussions Act

Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) introduced the Protecting Student Athletes from Concussions Act. This legislation helped K-12 schools develop procedures to prevent, detect and treat athletes who suffer from concussions during school sports. Concussions can cause symptoms such as:

  • dizziness
  • balance issues
  • cognitive (thinking)
  • communication problems

Endorsed by the NFL, NHL. NBA, NCAA and more, this act created school plans that include concussion safety training for school personnel, and helped increase awareness of dangers associated with concussions in student athletes.

I saw a show about this last night. With football season starting up, it's important for parents to be aware of concussion symptoms and precautions to take to prevent them. Mindy Hudon, M.S., CCC-SLP

@DonnaJohn Concussions are a huge issue that can have major impact on the developing brain. Executive function skills can be impacted with memory, planning, organization, reasoning, etc.

This is so important! Grateful my son never got a concussion while playing high school football and lacrosse. I told him that if he ever did, that was it! No more! Thanks for sharing, Mindy Hudon, M.S., CCC-SLP . 👍
