Is Your Child Growing Normally? Here's How Your Doctor Can Tell!

Physicians use growth curves to help determine if a child is growing "normally." On average, a child grows 5 to 7 centimeters a year. Usually after infancy, children follow a certain growth curve. If they do not follow their curve, an assessment needs to be done to evaluate if there is an underlying problem.

If growth is delayed or accelerated, a pediatrician can do an evaluation to see if this is something that runs in the family, if a child is small for his or her age but growing normally, or if there's another underlying reason that needs further medical care.
