A Healthy Relationship With Yourself: 4 Signs That You May Lack Self-Acceptance

Our first relationship in life is with ourselves, and if this relationship is unhealthy, we cannot engage maturely with another. Self-esteem is linked to better relationships, success in school and work, and improvements in physical and mental health, and it begins with self-acceptance. Yet the path to self-acceptance is one of the most challenging emotional and spiritual processes that we can go through.

Quite often we realize that even after a lot of inner work, we still feel that we cannot accept ourselves. We discover that even after years of therapy and healing, we still possess a level of discomfort within ourselves. It is time to look this discomfort in the eye and identify its origin in the mind/heart split.

Signs that you lack self-acceptance include:

  1. Self-criticism and inner judgment.
  2. Not feeling at home with yourself.
  3. Feeling you always need to fight and struggle with yourself.
  4. Seeing yourself through the eyes of world and not through the “eyes of the heart.”

To be able to expand ourselves, as well as to naturally show sensitivity and love toward other people, we need to develop self-love and self-acceptance first. This power can enable us to blossom and develop true self-confidence that is real and authentic, and it can even lead to love.
