How to Teach Kids With Autism or Other Disabilities to Communicate Using Pictures

Does your child have autism or a related disability? Does he struggle to communicate his basic wants and needs? Here’s a simple way to help your child communicate!

  • Take photographs of all your child’s favorite things, like toys and food items.
  • Hold up two photos at a time, and encourage your child to point to the one he wants.
  • Make sure you tell him the names of the items to remind him in the future.
  • When he makes a choice, immediately offer him that item to reinforce his attempt to communicate.

It's a great communication exercise that also can be fun!
