Personal Health Checks: How & Why You Should Monitor Your Own Health

Most people know that going to the doctor and getting regular checkups is essential, but with almost one in four Americans skipping health checkups because of the cost, monitoring your health may be more critical than ever.  Although you can use self-monitoring tools like wearable sensors or mobile apps, you don’t have to. Even just having an idea about your body’s norms is a good place to start.

Life Insurance

An important step in anyone’s health journey is life insurance. Although it might not seem like it, it’s essential for protecting your family and dependents. It isn’t something that you will personally benefit from, but it will help your dependents if you die unexpectedly.

What are the different types of life insurance? There are actually quite a few, meaning that there are many options to consider if you want to get life insurance. The two most basic are term and permanent life policies. Term life plans protect you for some time, and permanent life policies stay active until you die.

  • Term Insurance: Term life insurance policies are excellent options if you want to protect yourself during an important period of your life. For example, if you have a family, you might want to have a term policy so that your family would still be able to afford a mortgage or education if you died.
  • Permanent Insurance: There are several different permanent life insurance policies that you might consider. Some plans accrue more money over time, and others include investments in the stock market. You can also have a combination of those two plans or get a guaranteed life insurance policy.

If you want to make sure your funeral costs are covered, you can get final expense insurance. In addition, if you have significant debt or need to get a large loan, credit life insurance policies can help.

Why You Should Monitor Your Health

Getting involved in your health may help improve it. For example, if you decide to keep a personal health record, you can keep track of your medical conditions, operations, procedures, medicines, allergies and immunizations. It’s a lot to keep track of, so keeping a record of it might be helpful.

Even if you don’t keep detailed records like that, even having an idea of your health can be beneficial. Self-tracking can help motivate you to achieve your health goals. Your health is about you, so tracking your medical history puts you in control. Here are other ways keeping track of your health can help you:

  • Save Money: Keeping records of your health can help you save money, especially if you see multiple doctors. For example, if you know that you get headaches and a runny nose when you have a cold, you can prevent yourself from spending money by going to a doctor for mild illnesses.
  • Accuracy: By keeping personal health records, you can make sure that your information is accurate and updated. Doing this will help you with your doctors because you can provide your medical history. That way, you don’t need to rely on them to track your health themselves.
  • Control: Keeping records may help ensure that you have control over them. You can share it with who you want and can share it when you want, without going through someone else. For example, if you keep it with you when you travel or move, you can use it on the go or during an emergency.

Techniques to Track Your Health

  • One of the easiest things you can do to help improve your life is track what you eat. There are many apps that you can use if you have a smartphone, or you can write down the foods you eat. If you don’t want to keep close track of it, even having a general idea of how many fruits and vegetables you eat a day or how many carbs are in a bagel can help.
  • Depending on your goals, you might want to keep a file of your doctors’ visits and create a personal health record. That way, you don’t have to search around or contact many different offices for information.
  • If you don’t want to keep detailed records, using an app might be the most convenient and helpful way to track your health. With apps, you can track your food and water intake, how much you sleep, the steps you take and sometimes even your heart rate and stress levels.
  • Even if you don’t want to or can’t download an app, you can measure your heart rate before, during and after exercise. You can also monitor how you’re sleeping and your blood pressure by yourself. Even things like hair loss or regularly taking your temperature can help.

Taking control of your health is essential. From things like monitoring your diet and exercise to getting a life insurance policy, there are many steps you can take to help yourself. Doing so may help you save money and streamline your visits to the doctor.

Monitoring your own health is so important! I do blood pressure checks (almost) daily and do make notes of other changes/concerns so I remember to talk to my doctor about them.
