Martin Luther King Jr. Day: What’s the Link Between Health & Healing Racial Inequality? by Jaya Jaya Myra

As the nation observes Martin Luther King Jr. Day, it is important to recognize and listen to the racial justice and equality battles that we continue to fight within our society every day. There are so many ways that individuals are fighting against racial inequality, but what if I told you that fighting for racial equality and social injustice can also improve your health?
It can!
The mindset that propagates racism and social inequalities is a destructive one that will also impact your mental health, emotional health and eventually physical well-being. If we want to end racism in our society, we must first look at the mindset that creates it and ensure we are working daily to create a healthy, positive mindset and emotional state that facilitates health, compassion and tolerance for all.
In my book The Soul of Purpose, I discuss the link between health and contributing to the healing of racial inequality by teaching people the power of purpose and how to create a healthy mindset. The same things that tear us down as individuals and lead us to illness, depression and becoming emotionally bankrupt are the same things that tear apart our society at its roots.
I created The WELL Method to help teach people an ethos for healthy living. This method works to create a healthy mindset while impacting personal health and societal well-being. Growing up in a mixed race family, I lived knowing how much inequality causes harm.
