Childhood Vision Problems: 4 Warning Signs Your Child May Have Trouble Seeing

Back-to-school season signals that it’s the time of year for well-child checkups. Along with physicals and yearly vaccinations to go back to school, it’s important to ensure your child also has a comprehensive eye exam.

Younger children may not tell you they cannot see, so it’s important to watch for warning signs of vision impairment.

If you suspect your child may have a vision problem, reach out to your health-care provider and schedule an appointment as soon as possible. Here are some warning signs to look out for:

  1. Wandering or crossed eyes.
  2. Family history of childhood vision problems.
  3. Disinterest in reading or viewing distant objects.
  4. Squinting eyes or turning heads in an unusual manner while watching television or looking at objects.

Even if you don’t see any warning signs, it’s recommended you schedule your child’s first eye exam before they are 1 year old, and schedule a yearly exam every year following.
