Summer Workout Tips: Here Are 7 Ways to Stay Safe & Healthy When Exercising in the Summer Heat

What is one goal that you would like to accomplish this summer? For some, it might be to pick up a new hobby or watch a new TV show. For many, however, it is to start exercising more and to get into better shape. The summer days can be long and hot, and working out can be exhausting. Here are some tips to stay safe and get the most out of your summer workout:

  1. Stay hydrated. The hot summer days can tire you out more quickly than you would expect. It is important that you stay hydrated by drinking water and consider a sports drink for longer workouts.
  2. Plan your workout. If you are exercising outside, avoid working out between the hours of 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. — the hottest time of the day.
  3. Dress light. Dress in light-weight clothing that is brightly colored to be easily visible in traffic. Wear clothing that is moisture-wicking and sweat resistant to help keep you dry.
  4. Wear sunscreen. Apply sunscreen before your workouts to avoid damaging your skin.
  5. Know your body. Know when to rest. If you start to feel unwell, rest to avoid injury or illness.
  6. Go indoors. Do your workout inside your home or garage, if possible, to avoid the heat.
  7. Refuel with cold foods. Cold foods, such as salads or smoothies, are great for refreshing and refueling.
