Ways to Avoid Skin Cancer: 5 Tips to Help Protect Your Skin & Keep It Healthy When Heading Outdoors This Summer

Summer is here, and as more people are spending time outside, it’s important to follow these tips to help keep your skin healthy and prevent skin cancer. One out of five Americans will develop skin cancer by the time they are 70, but here are five ways you can help prevent melanoma:

  • Wear sunscreen. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15. Apply sunscreen generously and reapply at least every two hours.
  • Stay out of the sun when possible. Avoid the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., as the sun's rays are the strongest during this time.
  • Keep your skin covered. Wear a hat when you go outside, and wear long sleeves when possible to limit sun exposure.
  • Don't smoke. Smoking damages the fibers that give your skin strength, increasing your chance for wrinkles, and it also increases your risk of squamous cell skin cancer.
  • Eat healthy. Eating healthy foods, such as fruits and veggies, and drinking plenty of water keeps your skin hydrated.

If you are concerned about any spots on your skin, contact your primary health-care provider, such as a nurse practitioner (NP). They may schedule a telehealth visit with you or ask you to send photos of the spot in question.
