It’s an uncertain time. People around the world are experiencing heightened anxiety, and many are glued to minute-by-minute headlines wondering what will happen next and whether they are in danger. It’s natural to feel worried and even scared during uncertain times, but there are ways to keep your emotions from overtaking your life. Here are five tips to help ease your coronavirus anxiety now:
- Stick to trustworthy sources. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), World Health Organization (WHO) and your local public health authorities have all the information you need to know.
- Don’t obsess over the news. Limit the number of times you check for updates, especially if it causes added anxiety.
- Focus on the things you can control. Stay home, wash your hands, avoid touching your face and focus on keeping your immune system strong through diet, exercise and sleep.
- Find ways to connect. We’re social by nature and loneliness can exacerbate anxiety, so find ways to engage with others to help close the distancing divide.
- Lean on a health-care provider you trust. Take advantage of telehealth video appointments and call lines to ask questions and talk about your concerns. Nurse practitioners are available to help clear up confusion and ease stress.
Some anxiety is normal right now, but there are ways to keep it from overwhelming you. Don’t hesitate to connect with others to talk about your concerns. Friends, family and health-care providers can be a voice of reason when you feel uncertain.
