Cardiovascular Disease Facts: 3 Dangerous Myths About Heart Disease You Need to Read Now

Cardiovascular disease is no joke. Cardiovascular disease is the No. 1 killer in the U.S. It will claim one in three lives – more than all cancers combined. Despite the prevalence, most Americans don’t know enough about it.

Here are the three biggest myths that are perpetuating poor heart health:

1. Myth: Cardiovascular disease runs in my family – there’s nothing I can do to prevent it.

Fact: People with a family history have a higher risk, but 80 percent of cardiovascular disease could be prevented with lifestyle changes.

2. Myth: I’ll know if I have heart disease.

Fact: High blood pressurediabetes and high cholesterol are leading causes of heart disease, and it’s possible to have them all without any signs. The only way to know for sure is to get tested for high risk factors at regular health-care provider visits.

3. Myth: It’s something only older people need to worry about.

Fact: Heart disease happens at any age, and how you live every day affects your heart health. Obesity, diabetes and other risk factors are skyrocketing, and so are heart issues in younger people.

Nearly 30 million people have heart disease, and 650,000 will die from it this year. Don’t take good heart health for granted!
