Early Warning Signs of a Stroke: Know the Symptoms & Seek Medical Treatment ASAP by Joyce Knestrick, CRNP, FAANP

Every 40 seconds, someone has a stroke. Too often, victims don’t recognize the signs or wait to see if the symptoms go away before seeking emergency treatment, but this is the wrong approach. During a stroke, your brain loses 1.9 million cells a minute, and delayed treatment increases the chance of lingering speech difficulties, memory loss, behavioral changes or worse, death. If you experience these stroke warning signs, call for help immediately:
- Blurred vision or seeing double.
- Numbness or the feeling of pins and needles in your arm or other extremities.
- Slurred speech.
- Wobbliness or poor balance.
- Confusion or loss of train of thought.
- A bad migraine.
As we age, it can be easy to chalk stroke symptoms up to just being exhausted, but don’t fall into that trap. If you suspect you are having a stroke, call 911. Every second counts! Learn more at WeChooseNPS.org.
