Health Benefits of Chicken Soup: Why We Eat Chicken Soup When We're Sick

You might have heard from your mom that chicken soup is therapeutic. And she was right. Chicken soup has been widely popular in Chinese and Jewish cultures. It is even referred to as “Jewish penicillin” for its anti-pathogen and immunity boosting properties.

Now, there is more evidence which breaks down all of the magical ingredients and benefits in a bowl of chicken soup. These include:

  • Hydration: Due to vomiting, loss of appetite and diarrhea, dehydration is unfortunately a common side effect of being sick. Bone broth-based soups like chicken soup are soothing, hydrating, nutrient-dense and are said to boost the immune system.
  • Salt and Taste: Sodium and other seasonings in chicken soup may help awaken those dull taste buds you often get when you are sick with a cold. As a result, sodium may be great at increasing your appetite when you are sick, and eating healthily while sick is important for increasing strength and preventing nutritional deficiencies.

So, take the time to whip up some chicken soup at home when your kid or spouse is not feeling too well. Add spices and herbs like garlicturmericginger, cayenne and black pepper.

When I was little, my mom always gave me Campbell's Chicken & Stars soup when I was sick. I always made homemade chicken noodle soup for my kids and now husband. Growing up, when I had a stomachache or stomach bug, it was warm Coke and chewing on ice cubes. The reasons you point out, Joy Stephenson-Laws JD , make so much sense as to why we want chicken soup. Thanks for sharing!
