Cross Country Skiing: Outdoor Fun & Fitness for the Whole Family by Jan Mostrom
Cross country skiing is a great way to get the whole family outside and get some exercise at the same time. Cross country ski equipment hasn't changed significantly for the recreational skier, so finding used equipment is a great way to introduce the family to this beautiful sport.
To gear up, make sure to wear breathable layers of winter clothes. I was in three different layers on top and two on the bottom with some good breathable ski socks. I worked up a good sweat, so wearing wicking layers is important so you don't get chilled.
Don't get discouraged when you start. Cross country skiing can take a bit of time to get the hang of, but it’s a lot like walking on skis – and that's just the way to start. We took our equipment to a forest preserve and hopped on. No lift lines or tickets and plenty of beautiful snow-covered nature to make exercise a lot of fun!
