Is Life Overwhelming? How to Take Time for You & Enjoy the Benefits of Self-Care

With the fast pace of life today, it is more important than ever for parents to be mindful of self-care. Moms and dads are stretched thin trying to balance work and home life, and mental health days are a great way to relax and recharge.

You don’t have to take a week-long vacation to the beach to have major health benefits. It can be as simple as a relaxing hour at a local coffee shop, sipping a latte and reading a newspaper. There is nothing wrong with taking a break and having adult time for yourself. Here are some ideas:

  • Grab a friend (or go solo) and take in a movie.
  • Get a massage.
  • Go to a local comedy night and laugh your cares away.
  • Schedule a date night.
  • Listen to favorite music from high school.
  • Work out.
  • Netflix binge!

Whatever you do, keep in mind that the stress you are under will pass. Sometimes when it rains it pours, but eventually the sun comes out and you see that beautiful rainbow – it just takes time. Reach out to your support system when you are feeling buried; we have all been there. The better you take care of yourself the more equipped you will be to handle whatever life throws at you!

You said it, Shannon Benish ! If you're not taking care of you, you can't care for others. Sooner or later, there will be a breakdown. Thank you for these insights and important reminders. I love all your ideas! Walks, meditation, breathing exercises and yoga are all part of my self-care protocol.

Comedy clubs rule! When I laugh that much, it occurs to me how little I laugh each day. Funny movies like Bad Moms do the trick for me too! Thanks Shannon!

Me too! The girlfriends and I went to dinner then watched Bad Moms 2 after. We hadn't laughed like that in ages. It wasn't just the movie, the entire night was great just laughing and catching up!
