Single Moms: Good Choices Vs. Bad Choices in Parenting (and Dating)

I constantly remind my daughter to "make good choices." Whether it is eating something a bit more healthy than her preferred ice cream sandwich, or doing homework before playing with her American Girl dolls, I often feel like I'm a broken record. Which made me think – am I always making the best choices?

A prime example is dating. If you've read what I've written before, you already know I am a single mom. I am the first to admit, I don't always make the right choices when it comes to dating. Ask any of my friends and they'll agree. However, I remember my grandmother telling me once that she would rather I date several people over time vs. settle for one who really isn't what I want at all.

The flip side of the coin is dating people who I know I can't "fix," which I think is something that is common with most women. Whether the person has a drinking issue or commitment issues, I want to be that person who makes them better.

Sadly, we all have to be responsible for our own selves. So, I try to help my daughter make good choices when it comes to her life and continue to plug forward on my own (sometimes not so good) choices.

Hi , Jessica! A Canton gal like me! (you'll know me from SLU) When I read this I saw myself! And I agree with grandma! " I would rather have 30 minutes of wonderful than a lifetime of nothing special" (steel magnolias) I just spent almost two years on and off with a great (much younger) guy that I knew was not going to be long term- he was awesome- BUT I do not regret a single moment. :) I will NEVER settle and my kids see a strong, happy single mom who doesn't need a man.

The struggle is real, Jessica Lawrence ! I was a single mom for a few years and I know of that which you speak! We make the best choices we can and keep in mind that we are the ultimate role models for our kids. Not easy but necessary. And I hear you, too, Dawn!
