World Thyroid Day Is the Time to Raise Awareness About Thyroid Health by Samantha Martin

World Thyroid Day Is the Time to Raise Awareness About Thyroid Health

Happy World Thyroid Day! I have hypothyroidism, which is an under-active thyroid. Hashimoto's disease, an autoimmune disease, is the No. 1 cause of hypothyroidism, and if you have it, just taking thyroid meds isn't enough. Lifestyle changes are necessary to make sure your body can work properly and you can feel your best.

We are still playing with my thyroid medication to get me feeling better. When you have hypothyroidism and/or Hashimoto's disease, you are tired all of the time – chronic fatigue tired. I thought that I was tired just because I was a stay-at-home mom of two very young kids, but bloodwork confirmed that my thyroid levels and antibodies were abnormal. I have been feeling better since starting medication, but I am still not great.

I only have so much energy for the day, and when it is used I am exhausted and done. I don't want to move from the couch, and just thinking about leaving the house with two kids tires me out. This morning I actually feel pretty good, which means I have to decide how to use my energy: run errands with the kids or clean the house.

If you feel off get your thyroid checked!

Thanks for sharing this, @samantha1020. I was recently diagnosed with hypothyroidism. I need to look into Hashimoto's next. It's certainly a struggle. Thanks for raising awareness.
