With a Stroke, Every Second Counts: 5 Tips to Help You Act Fast!

They can happen in an instant. When a brain vessel ruptures or is blocked by a clot, blood-starved parts begin to shut down. Patients who recognize stroke symptoms and get help fast, ideally within 90 minutes of the first sign, can dramatically reduce the risk of permanent brain damage, death and long-term disability. Here are tips to help you prepare:

  • Know the F.A.S.T signs. A drooping face (F), weak arm (A) and slurred speech (S) all signal it’s time to call 911 (T).
  • Stay awake. Stroke victims can be sleepy, but treatment is more important than rest.
  • Avoid medication. Aspirin can be deadly during a hemorrhagic stroke.
  • Take an ambulance. Emergency care on the way to the hospital can be life-saving.

Know the less obvious symptoms. Vision problems, confusion, leg weakness or balance issues can also signal a stroke. Stroke victims lose almost two million brain cells every minute until blood flow is restored. Recognizing symptoms and acting F.A.S.T. is critical to recovery, so be prepared and don’t hesitate to seek treatment!
