Autism Awareness: A Little Insight for Parents Worried About Autism Spectrum Disorder

Most parents worry about their child’s development at one point or another. For some, greater awareness surrounding autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has been reassuring. For others, the sheer probability of their child falling somewhere on the spectrum sets them in a tailspin.

If you’re navigating toddlerhood with your little one and finding yourself consumed with whether they are developmentally on track, here are some things to keep in mind:

  • If you are worried, act. If ever you feel your child isn’t expressing joy or exchanging social cues, talk with your child’s provider. Age-appropriate behaviors should be your guide, but your instincts are valid and deserve attention.
  • Lots of kids have autism symptoms but are not on the spectrum. Plenty of kids seem tongue-tied around peers, have a slow-to-develop vocabulary, eat the same food every day and obsess about itchy tags. It’s the combination of signals that may cause red flags, and your provider can help you sift through what is normal and what is cause for concern.

If you have questions or need help, talk to your child’s provider!
