Bodypump, Pure Barre & Orangetheory: My Take on 3 Popular Exercise Classes

I'm turning 50 soon, so I decided to try these three popular exercise classes to see what all the fuss was about. Here's my 30-second take on Bodypump, Pure Barre and Orangetheory...

Bodypump by Les Mills: This licensed regimen requires a lot of equipment and is basically a 50-minute, music-driven weightlifting class with barbells, dumbells and a mat. If you do it two to three times a week you will definitely feel and look stronger. The downside: it's not great for weight loss and it can wreak havoc on your knees and shoulders if you overdo it. So go light.

Pure Barre: I picked Pure Barre because there was a Groupon, but I’m guessing the other barre classes are similar. If you have money and time to burn and want a better butt, this will do it. About 90 percent of the 60-minute class focuses on your core and your “seat,” as they so delicately put it, and the moves are hard. I’m going to stick with a more all-around workout, but it was fun for a try. [img]

Orangetheory This is my new favorite thing, because it’s like having a personal trainer flanked by a room full of hard-working, sweaty, normally sized people. A lot of treadmill work at varying intervals, a rower and a regularly changing routine of weights and floor exercises pretty much makes for the perfect workout. It’s not cheap, but it's a lot of bang for the buck. [img]
