Got Eczema? 4 Tips From a Dermatologist to Help Avoid Winter Eczema Flareups

Fluctuating temps and forced heat can wreak havoc on any body, but for eczema sufferers, winter can be particularly rough. “People with eczema have an impaired skin barrier, which allows for outside allergens to irritate the skin more easily and lead to eczema,” says Dr. Mamina Turegano, a New Orleans-based dermatologist. However, she adds that "with proper moisturization and avoidance of triggers, patients with eczema can maintain healthy skin and avoid flares." Here are some tips:

  • Make your self comfortable for better sleep. For example, use cotton sheets and turn the thermostat down. "Higher indoor heat zaps skin of moisture, while synthetic sheets irritate," says Dr. Turegano.
  • Keep an eye on your diet. "Pay attention to what sets off your symptoms by keeping a food diary and talk to your doctor about the foods you cut out so you can make sure there are no nutritional deficiencies."
  • Moderate your stress level. "Stress is another common trigger for eczema. Try a meditation app to stay centered."
  • Find a product. A strong skin barrier keeps water in and irritants out. Sometimes, a prescription cream is key. An FDA-approved topical prescription cream like EpiCeram® can help.
